Another Supreme Court decision day, another day where Trump’s executive powers are confirmed and expanded. Yes, Vote by Mail survived this latest challenge, but a 5-4 decision? Not great. At all. But in hopeful news, the John Lewis Voting Rights Act just passed both houses of our state legislature and is on its way to the Governor’s desk.
Another Supreme Court decision day. Yes, birthright citizenship survived this latest challenge, but a 6-3/5-4 decision? We can’t rest, they will try again. In the words of Congresswoman Mejia, “While today's ruling offers a sigh of relief, the danger is still ever present. The fight to defend the 14th Amendment—rights like due process, and equal protection under the law—did not begin today, and it will not end today.”
Another Supreme Court decision day. The rights of our trans friends and family were attacked. Trans rights are human rights. So today it was a massive relief to learn that the NJ Legislature just passed the Shield Bill affirming crucial protections for reproductive and transgender healthcare in the state.
Another Supreme Court decision day. Not for nothing, the Court decided that we in fact need MORE money in political campaigns. Billionaires trying to buy elections? No problem!
AND ALSO:
The war in Iran is still being conducted on a weekends-only schedule so as not to spook the stock market
This administration has been given unbridled power to go after our immigrant friends and family members
Eminent institutions like the Smithsonian and the Kennedy Center are forced to bend to the whims of this President
Essential national services like the National Parks Service, the Post Office, Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security are being threatened.
IT’S EXHAUSTING. IT’S SCARY.
But you know what? We understand the assignment. We will do EVERYTHING in our power to rein in this administration., and we have an excellent opportunity to do just that in November. We will do everything in our power to win back the House and (fingers crossed!) the Senate this year. It’s the absolute bare minimum we need to do, and it’s imperative that we do it.
What does that assignment look like in NJ 11 and our neighboring districts?
It looks like this: Electing representatives at every level of NJ government to stand up and defend our rights. Starting with winning every possible NJ Congressional district!
CD 7: You know who is back this week? The elusive Tom Kean Jr. We wish him good health. We also want to know why he thinks it’s fine for him to have excellent, high quality health care and four months leave from his job, but votes to cut off access to health care and family leave for everyone else.
-
- Average paid sick leave in the US: 7 days
- Average paid sick leave in NJ: 5 days
- Paid sick leave for public employees in NJ: 15 days
- Paid sick leave for federal employees: 13 days.
Kean missed 117 days. He voted to gut the ACA and Medicaid, and for work requirements for Medicaid recipients with health conditions. Most Americans can't just take 4 months off to deal with a medical issue, get paid for it and not be answerable to their employer.
We think CD 7 deserves representation that is fully engaged with the urgent questions of this unprecedented time. Note that NJ 11th for Change has not formally endorsed Rebecca Bennett yet, but STAY TUNED.
CD 2: Is it winnable? In a wave year? A wave year bigger than 2018? Definitely one to watch.
Winning downballot seats: This year there are competitive County Commissioner races in Morris (let’s go BLORRIS!) and Passaic. And local municipal races are up too!
What does that assignment look like nationally? Focusing on competitive purple House districts and Senate seats across the country. Some of the ones we’re watching:
There is *another* woman combat veteran running just across the river in NY 17 against Mike Lawler. Bet Cait Conley could use some support!
Sherrod Brown, James Talarico and Mary Pelota are all within the margin of error to flip Senate seats in Ohio, Texas, and Alaska.
Message us and tell us what other purple districts you are ready to support.
Our motto for the next 4+ months: Less handwringing, more ACTION.
Making calls
Sending texts
Door knocking
Strategic donations to candidates who have the will to WIN
Summer postcard campaign launching soon, stay tuned for details
We are an elections-focused group. We understand the assignment. There is nothing more important than making sure that Trump and his minions are MISERABLE in November. WE need to win EVERYWHERE. by WIDE margins.
Blue Wave? More like a BLUE TSUNAMI.
That’s the assignment.
