Hello, Supporters!

ALL THAT WORK YOU DID to help Joe Biden and Kamala Harris win the White House?

ALL THAT WORK YOU DID supporting Mikie Sherrill here in New Jersey and Ossoff and Warnock in Georgia, so we could win the House and the Senate?

We did what we set out to do, and we earned the right to celebrate!!

But the work isn’t done. Now we've got to protect those victories!

Our wins are fragile. Our margins in the legislative branch are slim at best and (as today’s travesty of an impeachment vote proves) completely inadequate at worst.

And you can bet your sweet bippy that the GOP is laying the groundwork RIGHT NOW to take back the Senate and House in 2022.

Grrrrrrr.....

States with red statehouses know that WHEN MORE PEOPLE VOTE, the GOP loses. That’s why they want to disenfranchise as many likely-blue voters as possible, especially minorities, city-dwellers, the young and the poor. From coast to coast, the GOP is working frantically, introducing one horrifying piece of legislation after another, as fast as they can dream them up: Gerrymandering! Voter purges! Polling-place closures! VBM restrictions! Requiring multiple photo IDs! (But your public housing ID? Nope, that doesn't count.)

Any obstacle towards high voter turnout they can think of, they're working hard and fast to implement. And if they pull it off, we may never have a fair election — or a fair shot — ever again.

No wonder The Economist just downgraded us to “FLAWED DEMOCRACY” status.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

PASS THE “FOR THE PEOPLE” ACT!

This legislation is the top priority for Dems in the House of Representatives and the Senate, as you can tell by their bills’ names: H.R. 1 and S. 1. They are “omnibus bills” — that is, BIG multi-component bills with lots of provisions. All of the provisions in these bills are intended to protect the basic functioning of our country as a democracy! They protect voting access, voting rights and fair redistricting, and they fix the filibuster and campaign financing. The For the People Act is the best policy we’ve got, on a sweeping federal level, to restrict the GOP's death-by-a-thousand-cuts efforts to disenfranchise voters through state legislation.

HOW CAN *YOU* HELP?

Come to our letter/postcard-writing Zoom party this Tuesday, February 16, at 7:00–8:00 pm (with a visit from special guest Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill!). While we talk, we'll be writing to Congressional Reps and Senators, and writing letters to the editor to help educate our communities!

Don’t feel like you’re an expert yet? No worries! We'll be providing everyone with a cheat sheet of “For the People” talking points, so it's EASY AS PIE to draft your own message. Letter templates and postcard scripts will be available too, if you’d rather work that way. 

Postcarders are VERY, VERY welcome at this event, too! Got any leftover cards, markers, stickers and stamps? Now's the time to put them to use! Write to your reps to say you support H.R. 1/S. 1 — or pick out individual parts of the legislation that mean the most to you, and write about those. Send one card about protecting voting rights . . . one card about automatic voter registration . . .  one card about campaign financing, etc. Quick and easy and to the point!

No matter how you do it, the important thing is to SPEAK UP!

Passing the For the People Act is crucial for protecting voters’ rights, ensuring fair elections, preserving our hard-won majorities in the legislature, and getting ALL future good legislation passed.

We’re so thrilled that Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill will be stopping by to say hello and talk to us about her priorities in this session, including H.R. 1. It's reasonable to expect that she and our Senators are on-board with these measures ...

HOWEVER!

Our representatives still need to hear how much it matters to us. They need to know we have their backs, and expect them to fight like hell to pass this legislation — without unnecessarily whittling the policies away to a pathetic nub in an effort to “compromise” with the GOP.
