Electober. Knocktober. Voteober. Whatever you call it, October is Election Month and we are celebrating!
We celebrated by writing postcards for Sue Altman in CD-7! Join us for our next postcard party on Wednesday, Oct. 16. Or sign up for your own pack here if you want to host your own party and we’ll make it happen! Donate to help us cover the cost of stamps here!
Planning your canvassing and phone banking week? LOTS to choose from in the EVENTS section at the end of the newsletter! As your Do Something! concierges, may we recommend the Sunday, Oct. 13th CD 7 canvass in Somerville, the Sunday, Oct. 13th CD 11 canvass in Montclair, and the NJ Young Dems South Asian Caucus phone bank on Wednesday, Oct 16? No PA buses this weekend, but they are back next week!
We celebrated with old friends and new canvassing in Maplewood and in Belleville.
We celebrated with Bowzer from Sha-Na-Na as we knocked doors in Pennsylvania!
We asked some of you how you are celebrating and here’s what you told us:
Stacey Murphy says she’s “going to make a hot dish to celebrate as I finish writing my pile of 200 postcards that need to be mailed on October 24”.
Andrea Podgarsky gives us ALL the spooky feels. She says,“Anyone that knows me knows that I love this time of year. I like the mystery, the costumes, the movies, the fall themed foods, and the creativity that surrounds Halloween. This October is different. I am trying to balance my ghostly desire to take action several times a week in the face of this creepy ultra high stakes election with witchy October activities AND the horror of work and life’s other ghoulish chores. So I’ve decided to embrace it and celebrate Electober by combining my penchant for all things spooky with my public declaration of support for those opposed to the monsters and werewolves. My lawn signs adorn my graveyard and it makes me smile (in a vampiric sort of way).”
Fern Wolkin’s answer inspired us. She says:
“Believe me, I know how hard it is to motivate yourself to phone bank or canvass. For me phone banking is even harder than canvassing, which is weird because with phone banking I have all the factual information in front of me. And yet canvassing door-to-door is much preferable.
I'll give you a story from each that may motivate you for Electober. I have been making phone calls for the Harris campaign Protection phone banking in GA. That is calling people who have been taken off the voting rolls for some reason, legitimate or not. Of course, there are the hang-ups that can be discouraging but in one session I managed to talk to 3 people and re-register them so they could vote. That's three votes in Georgia and it was really satisfying and they were really grateful. That's what makes me make those phone calls again.
As for canvassing, yesterday we went to Pennsylvania and were only able to talk to a few people, but the people we spoke to were listening and were surprised to hear that some of the things they believed were lies told by the Trump campaign. They were grateful we stopped by and while we were not 100% sure how they were voting when we left, we felt pretty good that they were leaning toward us. Any amount of canvassing or phone banking is good and more than we would have without you. I plan to do this over & over again. Under 30 days to go! We can do it together!”
Wow! 27 more days to DO SOMETHING so get your party shoes on and start celebrating ELECTOBER!
