How Many Days Until Early
In-Person Voting Begins
(Oct 29–Nov 6):
8 DAYS

How Many Days Until
Election Day (Nov 8):

18 DAYS

Election Day is in two and a half weeks — and it’s no exaggeration to say that everything hangs on the results of this midterm election.

  • If Congress breaks BLUE: Biden promises to codify Roe if the Dems keep — and improve — their margin.
If Congress breaks RED: the GOP promises to push for a nationwide abortion ban.

  • If Congress breaks BLUE: the Dems will continue to support Social Security and Medicare — long-standing economic safety-net programs that we’ve contributed to our entire working lives.
If Congress breaks RED: small-government extremists want to recast these programs so they’re subject to revocation every five years, leaving tens of millions of people in poverty, without the financial support they spent their working lives chipping in for.

  • If Congress breaks BLUE: Congress will protect voting rights, voter access, and election integrity nationwide.
If Congress breaks RED: Congress will turn our elections into a mockery of democracy.

  • If Congress breaks BLUE: our investment in a green economy — and the prospect of a habitable planet — will have a fighting chance.
If Congress breaks RED: our future and our children’s future will be sold off to the highest Big Oil bidder, with Elon Musk, Zuck, and Jeff Bezos smirking down on us all from orbit.

Perhaps we are exaggerating a little.

All this — and yet so many of our friends and neighbors aren’t paying attention to this election.

Maybe they need basic information about the voting process. You can help with that! Invite them to our Zoom session on Sunday, October 23 at 7:00. Or send them our easy-to-use info page here!

Please join us on Sunday at 7:00 pm
for a session about the practical realities of voting in 2022.
Click here for the Zoom link.

Or maybe they need to learn more about the candidates, and the issues at stake. You can help with that, too! Tune in for one of the upcoming debates so you can share what you learn — or invite them to watch with you! The October 25 debate, held on the Drew University Campus in Madison, is open to the public. There will be a crew of NJ 11th for Change supporters there (look for the purple balloon), and we'll be glad to save you a seat! Registration is required by the venue.

Have neighbors who haven’t decided yet?
That’s what debates are for! See our Events section at the end of this newsletter for details.

That's just the tip of the iceberg of what YOU can do about disengaged voters in your community.

But it’s not just voters who are disengaged this year. We can’t help but notice that many of our past volunteers are choosing to sit at home instead of knocking doors.

We know everyone is sick of hearing that this election is the most important election of our lives.

BUT IT’S TRUE.

If you care about what happens next in this country — in our world — then it’s time to give it your all.

OR AT LEAST YOUR SOME.

Volunteering — canvassing! phone banking! talking to strangers! — can be a scary thing. Heck, allowing ourselves to HOPE, and to admit how much we care about what happens when there's no guarantee that things will turn out okay — is even scarier. But we urge you to be brave. Take the risk.

YOU’VE GOT TOO MUCH SKIN IN THE GAME NOT TO GET IN THE GAME.

You know we’re down to the wire when we start trotting out inspirational quotes — quotes of hope, quotes of urgency — but here we are. Time for a little Teddy Roosevelt (with some color commentary from Tina Turner).

Be daring! We need you to tag into the arena, by volunteering.

You know who gives it their all?
Our canvassing volunteers!

Last weekend in Parsippany, we all gathered at Morris County Commissioner candidate Judy Hernandez’s house, got to hang out (and eat cake) with Mikie Sherrill, and then off to knock lots of friendly doors! MISSION: transforming apathetic neighbors into voters with a plan to get to the polls!

We hope you’ll join in one of the canvasses for Mikie or Tom Malinowski listed in our Events & Volunteer Opportunities at the end of this newsletter and on our Volunteer Opportunities webpage, updated weekly. Especially our November 5 canvass in Montclair, which will feature gourmet snacks and treats and some of the best coffee in town. We’ll wrap up our canvassing season with a happy hour later that day, open to all of our active 2022 volunteers!

Calling all volunteers!
November 5!

Also giving it their all?

Our postcard team!

Patricia Doherty, Mara Novak, and Jim Price stepped up to the plate to cut lists of voters to reach, make stacks of postcards, and drive to locations all over CD11 to deliver postcards to our pick-up spots. Over 180 packets, in just a week!

Cards in nice tidy stacks of 50

Printing lists of voters and addresses

Packets ready for delivery to pick-up stations all over the district

Now we’ve got 10,000 postcards out with valiant postcard writers, who are busily writing and mailing our cards to a targeted group of highly motivatable voters. It’s an effort we know will pay off!

Packets awaiting contactless porch pick-ups on one volunteer's front step.

Volunteers having a great time! Many hands make light work.

Next up? VOTE CHASING!

In the final week before the election, we’ll be text banking to chase friendly voters who haven’t yet cast their ballots. It’s speedy, time-sensitive work, and we need an army of volunteers to help! Vote-chasing is fun, satisfying, and QUICK work that you can do from the comfort of your own home — heck, from the comfort of your car, or standing in line at the supermarket! Click, click, click, and you’ve reached dozens of voters with the information — and the nudge — they need to fill out that ballot, drop by that early-voting polling place, and maybe even nag their spouse and kids and neighbors to do the same.

Want to help vote chase? Email us here with “VOTE CHASING” in the subject line!

So many important ways to help, and so little time.

It all comes down to making a smart plan, and building a team to make it happen. We’ll leave you with one last quote:

We are organized.

We are ready — not just to work, but to work and WIN!

Come be part of the winning effort!

NJ 11th FOR CHANGE OPPORTUNITIES

Vote-Chasing by Text Banking STARTING SOON! SIGN UP NOW!
In the final weeks and days of election season, use your phone and computer to reach CD11 voters who are sitting on their ballots! It's fast and fun and very, very effective. No ballot left behind!

If you are interested in joining when this program starts, email us with "VOTE CHASING" in the subject line.

FINAL DAYS!
POSTCARDING WITH NJ 11th for CHANGE!
We've got a limited number of postcards that still need to be claimed. All you need are stamps and the time and commitment to write them and mail them. Ready to get going? Email us here with "POSTCARDING" in the subject line and we'll coordinate getting you a stack of postcards, while they last!

(Can't write but want to donate stamps or stamp-money? Email us!)

Working America Letter-Writing Campaign: You know that NJ 11th for Change usually focuses close to home — no national campaigns that make us roam far afield. HOWEVER! We do make one exception! Our volunteers have been participating in Working America's national letter campaign for several years, with terrific success! Working America (the activism branch of AFL-CIO) is a data-driven organization with its finger on the pulse of their electorate, and they have a meticulously field-tested, proven strategy for swinging votes in tight races. They know exactly which voters to touch, and exactly what issues and messages will do the job.

How does it work? You will be sent a document with the text of a carefully crafted letter, focused on one of three core issues that (research shows!) turns red voters blue. You'll also get a list of addresses. Type a few additional personal sentences into the document, print it out, sign it by hand, stuff it in an envelope and mail it off with a handwritten address. Print, sign, and stuff till you’ve completed your list! (You’ll need to provide stationery and stamps.) Our experienced volunteers say that it’s quicker and easier than writing postcards … and the vote-swing rate is the envy of grassroots groups from coast to coast!

Interested in helping? Get on the list by emailing NJ 11’s Working America expert, Jim Price, and putting “WORKING AMERICA” in the subject line. (Can't write but want to donate stamps or stamp-money? Email Jim!)

Donate Once

Your contributions make our work possible! Donations allowed us to make almost 160,000 voter contacts in New Jersey's 11th congressional district in 2020, and over 130,000 in 2021; our efforts were a big part of making 11 towns flip from Trump in 2016 to Biden in 2020 (including some historically deep-red municipalities!) and securing a tight victory for Governor Phil Murphy in 2021.

Your generous donation goes towards our data analysis and voter-file access, text banking expenses, support for our events, printing, and much more. It allows us to continue our work building a government that is transparent, responsive and accountable. Please visit our "DONATE" link and pledge any amount. Every contribution helps as we charge ahead into 2021 and beyond!
