NJ Makes National News (and so can you!)

Like everyone involved in political communications, we’re pretty much just spending the next few days worshiping at the altar of 25-year-old Megan Coyne. And unlike everyone else, here in CD-11 we get to claim her as our own!

"So, does that mean I get some NJ 11th for Change swag?"

Who is Megan Coyne, you ask? She’s the bane of the GOP’s existence, the current enfant terrible of Washington, D.C., and (until recently) the bad-ass superstar of the notoriously snarky @NJGov Twitter account!

LOCAL GIRL MAKES GOOD, says the New York Times.

Just this month, Coyne was plucked away from Joisey to become the White House Office of Digital Strategy’s Deputy Director of Platforms. And with less than a month on the job, she’s popping the heads off of GOP legislators!

That’s just SO Jersey!

If you’ve seen this Twitter campaign slamming Republican legislators who oppose President Biden’s student loan debt forgiveness plan — but who personally took hundreds of thousands — if not millions! — of federal loan dollars from PPP and were perfectly happy to have those loans forgiven, well…. then you’ve seen Coyne’s work.

LIVINGSTON HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2015:
Voted Most Likely to Strike Fear into the Hearts
of Hypocritical Senators & Congressional Reps!

Speaking of bad-ass women from Livingston:

NJ 11th for Change Field Director Stacey Abenstein has so far deployed her letter-writing team to send out almost 38,000 vote-by-mail application forms to voters who haven’t yet signed up for mail ballots! This initiative has a strong focus on voters in “the new towns” of CD-11 — potential Mikie Sherrill supporters who haven’t had the benefit of being nagged by us for the past five years.

WHAT.
It's what we do!

Big shout-out to the volunteers who are hard at work on this project! If you’d like to get involved in this important effort, please email Stacey, with “VBM letters” in the subject line!

Packets getting ready to go, straight from Stacey's dining room table to yours!

… and from Montclair:

Kudos to Mikie Sherrill for holding a Town Hall this week! We were wowed by how graciously and intelligently she handled questions about everything from local car thefts (lock your cars, everyone!) to Ukraine, Taiwan, and Afghanistan. Somehow, she managed to make even several aggressively hostile attendees feel respected and heard — no mean feat.

Keep it up, Mikie! At NJ 11th for Change, we know that Town Halls are crucial for a representative's transparency, responsiveness, and accountability … and for building voter enthusiasm.

… and bad-ass members from all over CD-11:

We’ve got plans for you in the months ahead!

Just looking at our efforts to help re-elect Rep. Mikie Sherrill, we’re plotting out

  • TWO canvass launch parties in September,
  • TWO canvass launch parties in October,
  • and at least ONE in November!

We NEED to see you there. And we promise we’ll make it fun! Some canvasses will feature pre-canvassing coffee socials, others will feature post-canvassing happy hours — and all of them will be open to anyone who joins us pounding the pavement that day.

Keep an eye out for these gatherings in our “Events & Volunteer Opportunities” listings in future newsletters (and in this one, too!) as well as on our website weekly volunteer updates and in our social media outlets. We look forward to seeing you, raising a glass together, and swapping door-knocking stories!

(ADVANCE WARNING: Postcarding and text banking are in the works, too — so get ready!)

… and members who care about CD-7, too!

Members who are part of the Endorsement Team (i.e., those who have either donated or volunteered in the past year) can expect an email next week about Rep. Tom Malinowski, in CD-7! We’ve gotten his responses to our endorsement questionnaire (nothing from his opponent yet…) and we’ll be sharing them with the committee so you can vote YES or NO about whether NJ 11th for Change should officially support his campaign.

If YES, you can expect to start seeing listings in this newsletter with opportunities for you to lend a hand in CD-7!

Listen up, team!

Megan "Straight Outta Livingston" Coyne is making a difference on a national level. (As one commentator noted, "when you absolutely positively need to talk shit better than anybody else you bring in a jersey girl.")

We can make a difference on a national level, too, because EVERY CONGRESSIONAL SEAT WE HOLD ONTO makes a difference on a national level. Here in CD-11, we have a seat in the House of Representatives that needs to be protected. And if there's one thing we know:

When you absolutely, positively need to reach voters better than anybody else, you bring in an NJ 11th for Change volunteer.

Come make a difference! YOU know what you need to do. It's time to get your name on the volunteer list, register for specific action events, and show up! We are so excited to see you at upcoming canvass launches and phone banks. We know Team Mikie feels the same way. Check out the “Events & Volunteer Opportunities” section below for LOTS of ways you can help support your own values in November!

SPECIAL EVENT TONIGHT!

August 26 is the anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which (back in 1920) gave some women in this country the right to vote.

Over a hundred years later, we are still fighting for full equality. This weekend is a WEEKEND OF ACTION in recognition of Women’s Equality. We hope you will participate.

Mikie Sherrill's campaign will be hosting a slew of canvassing events (see below), all aimed at holding her seat in the House so she can help defend women's rights.

The Women's Equality Weekend of Action kickoff is a rally TONIGHT! Hope you can make it!

This weekend is a WEEKEND OF ACTION in recognition of Women’s Equality!

Come out and do the most effective work possible to protect the rights of women in this country: CANVASS!

EVERY WEEK!

NJ 11th FOR CHANGE OPPORTUNITIES:

  • Tabling at Events: Is your town planning any civic events, festivals, street fairs, or farmers markets? Let us know, so we can help your community get ready to vote! There's nothing more satisfying than setting up shop at a local community event and encouraging constituents to vote or learn about their candidates. If you're interested, please email Mara! We're looking for volunteers to:

    • tell us about events in their towns and counties, and
    • come on out and staff the tables!

  • Vote-By-Mail Letter Campaign: Not all NJ voters know they have to actively request a mail-in ballot this year. That’s where YOU can help! We’ll provide the official VBM request forms and a list of names and addresses; you provide postage, post-its, and envelopes. Write a quick personal note on the post-it encouraging the recipient to vote by mail, stick it to the request form, stuff it in the envelope, and send it off! We have a tight list of in-district voters who need this little push to significantly increase their turnout rates. Let’s make it easy for them to do the right thing!

Interested in helping? Join the team by emailing NJ 11 Field Director Stacey Abenstein and putting “VBM CAMPAIGN” in the subject line. (Can't write but want to donate stamps or stamp-money? Email Stacey!)

  • Working America Letter-Writing Campaign: You know that NJ 11th for Change usually focuses close to home — no national campaigns that make us roam far afield. HOWEVER! We do make one exception! Our volunteers have been participating in Working America's national letter campaign for several years, with terrific success! Working America (the activism branch of AFL-CIO) is a data-driven organization with its finger on the pulse of their electorate, and they have a meticulously field-tested, proven strategy for swinging votes in tight races. They know exactly which voters to touch, and exactly what issues and messages will do the job.

How does it work? You will be sent a document with the text of a carefully crafted letter, focused on one of three core issues that (research shows!) turns red voters blue. You'll also get a list of addresses. Type a few additional personal sentences into the document, print it out, sign it by hand, stuff it in an envelope and mail it off with a handwritten address. Print, sign, and stuff till you’ve completed your list! (You’ll need to provide stationery and stamps.) Our experienced volunteers say that it’s quicker and easier than writing postcards … and the vote-swing rate is the envy of grassroots groups from coast to coast!

Interested in helping? Get on the list by emailing NJ 11’s Working America expert, Jim Price, and putting “WORKING AMERICA” in the subject line. (Can't write but want to donate stamps or stamp-money? Email Jim!)

  • COMING SOON: NJ 11th for Change Postcarding: Interested in joining our crack team of postcarders? Email NJ 11 Field Director Stacey Abenstein and put “NJ11 POSTCARDS” in the subject line. We'll be in touch as soon as we're ready to launch the postcarding portion of our 2022 efforts! (Can't write but want to donate stamps or stamp-money? Email Stacey!)

  • Operation Diggin’ Up the Dirt: Mikie’s opponent, Paul DeGroot, is a hard-right Trumper. He is also keeping very quiet in the public sphere about his positions; suspiciously quiet, one might say. We’re building a team to gather intel about his positions — and anything else that voters need to know.
To get involved, contact NJ 11th for Change Research Director Patricia Doherty, and put “DEGROOT RESEARCH” in the subject line.

Your contributions make our work possible! Donations allowed us to make almost 160,000 voter contacts in New Jersey's 11th congressional district in 2020, and over 130,000 in 2021; our efforts were a big part of making 11 towns flip from Trump in 2016 to Biden in 2020 (including some historically deep-red municipalities!) and securing a tight victory for Governor Phil Murphy in 2021.

Your generous donation goes towards our data analysis and voter-file access, text banking expenses, support for our events, printing, and much more. It allows us to continue our work building a government that is transparent, responsive and accountable. Please visit our "DONATE" link and pledge any amount. Every contribution helps as we charge ahead into 2021 and beyond!
